Thanksgiving Movies

Thanksgiving is a time when my immediate family gets together with my extended family on Cape Cod.  Usually most of the women of the clan head out early to hit the Black Friday sales.  Lately, the remaining men, and my wife Amy, head out to the movies.  This year's pick was "Arrival", a sci fi drama starring Amy Adams as a distinguished linguist enlisted by the military to discover the reason 12 alien ships had landed on earth.  Engrossing, thought-provoking, and intense, it leaves you with the hope that humanity has untapped potential to unify behind a cause.  The kind of movie that makes you want to see more.  So we did.

We returned to New Jersey and Amy, my son Malcolm and I went to see "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" from the mind of J.K. Rowling.  We saw this in 3D and felt the effect were well worth it, especially when they went inside the suitcase.  Very enjoyable, while predictable, it stays true to the Harry Potter world while adding an American twist.

Then we went to see "Doctor Strange", the newest character in the Marvel movie universe, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.  Opted not to go with the 3D experience, but the visuals were stunning nonetheless.  Typical origin story with the hero overcoming obstacles to defeat the bad guy.  A fun matinee romp, but too much fighting for Amy.
